Girls from Strathcona Girls Grammar School have just returned from a “once in a lifetime” trip to Tanzania.
The 15 girls raised more than $30,000 for the School of St Jude, a charity-funded school in the city of Arusha, which aims to end poverty through education.
Year 11 student Phoebe said some of the money was dedicated to university education for two students.
“We learnt the importance of quality education for young people in order to create a successful future and the hardships that those in a third world country face,” she said.
Learning and Digital Innovation head Michelle Dennis said many of the students had taken on parttime jobs to fund their trip.
“It’s a life-changing journey that has already made a massive impact on the girls at a vital stage of their development, when they are considering their place in the world and what career path they may choose,” she said.
Year 11 student Alyssa said the trip “was a once in a lifetime opportunity”.
